Transforming Kitchen Cleaning into a Sensory Adventure for Your Toddler

We’ve got a major fruit fly problem that’s been nothing short of maddening. No matter what I’ve tried, those pests just won’t go away. So, I made the decision to give our kitchen a thorough cleaning. But here’s the twist: I had a 15-month-old toddler running around, making the task quite challenging.

To solve this dilemma, I got a little creative. I placed my little one in his high chair and turned it into an exciting sensory experience. I started putting various items on his tray for him to taste, smell, and touch. What began as a chore turned into nearly an hour of pure enjoyment. Every time I reached into the spice cabinet, it felt like embarking on a new adventure. We’d sprinkle the spices on the tray, explore their textures, and even taste a little bit.

It was amazing to see how engaged he was. I’d wipe off the tray and introduce something new every few minutes as I walked by. At one point, I took it up a notch by adding gooey, sticky pumpkin seeds and entrails to the mix, creating a rich sensory experience. He wasn’t a fan!

These kinds of experiences are incredibly valuable for our little one. Not only did he interact with me while I cleaned the kitchen, but these sensory activities also sparked activity in the neural pathways of his developing brain, which is crucial for his growth and learning. It also encourages him to be open to trying new things. It’s a reminder that every moment can be a learning experience, even during the most mundane tasks.

Think back to your own childhood, like when your mom did the laundry. What did you smell? How did the warm laundry feel? Was it soft and cozy? As I reflect on those sensations, I remember the time spent with my mom as she folded clothes and even letting me help. So, try to find ways to involve your toddler in those chores – it can make them a little more fun.
