Sometimes in parenting, you come across situations where you have to choose your battles wisely. A few nights ago, I encountered one of those moments. As I prepared for bed and visited the bathroom, I was met with an unexpected sight: soap suds filling the toilet bowl. It took a moment to register what had happened – my four-year-old had once again found his way into my room, where he wasn’t supposed to be.

Initially, I felt irritated at the thought of him sneaking into my space. But as I stood there, staring at the soapy mess, I couldn’t help but laugh. How often does such silliness occur, and how long until it’s just a funny memory? I couldn’t help but share the amusing incident with my wife, Kate, and we both found ourselves chuckling.
The next morning, I confronted my mischievous little one. “Were you in my bedroom yesterday?” I asked. He responded with a mischievous grin, avoiding eye contact. When I inquired about the soap in the toilet, he remained silent, his smile speaking volumes. Kate sat nearby, struggling to contain her laughter.
In moments like these, it’s important to choose the high road, to laugh through the chaos, and to remember that our children are simply exploring the world in their own way. While the soap in the toilet may have been an inconvenience, it didn’t cause any harm. Instead, it provided us with a moment of levity in the midst of our daily routines. As the saying goes, “Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty.”
